CHEMICAL PEELS EXPLAINED

Chemical Peels are one of our most popular treatments in-clinic. They are affordable, comfortable and have minimal downtime, plus they can be customised to treat wrinkles, pigmentation and blemishes.

In just 45 minutes, we can visibly rejuvenate the skin to provide a brighter, more youthful-looking complexion. Here’s what you need to know before beginning your treatment plan.

What is a peel?

Chemical peels are treatments that use acids to remove the top layer of the skin to reveal new layers underneath. The acids in superficial peels help to dissolve the bonds between the dead layers of skin, allowing them to shed more easily. Deeper peels penetrate further into the skin, creating a controlled injury, which encourages cell turnover and the production of collagen and elastin. The strength of your peel will be determined based on the condition of your skin, concerns, desired results and downtime requirements.

How many will I need?

While you can just have a single peel, we recommend a course of at least 6 to create a long-term change in the skin. Like going to the gym, results will come when you commit to an ongoing program.

A series of peels also allows us to build up the tolerance of your skin. We always recommend new clients start off with a low-strength peel and increase the intensity to ensure we are maintaining the integrity of their skin.

Who are peels suitable for?

Peels are suitable for most skin types – even sensitive! Our range of peels can be combined and customised to suit your unique skin needs.

Some skin concerns/people are contraindicated and therefore shouldn’t have peels. Your therapist will be able to advise whether peels are suitable for you. We also offer professional facial treatments and LED light therapy which can be more suitable in these cases.

What downtime is required?

With our peels, downtime is usually minimal. You can expect some redness, flaking and mild peeling. This often presents around day 3 post-peel and may constitute for a further 5 days.

You may also experience purging. Purging is when the skin looks as though it is breaking out after a treatment. This is the skin removing all the toxins beneath the surface. Although this may seem disheartening, purging is a good thing. The duration of purging differs between clients, depending on how much congestion is underlying. However, as you go through your peel treatment plan, you may find the duration and intensity of purging decreases as your skin health improves!

What results should I expect?

Immediately after your peel, your skin will likely feel tight and slightly red. This may last up to 24 hours. Within 3 days, your skin will generally start to mildly flake and this may last up to a week. Once flaking subsides, you will start to see the results. Skin will appear brighter, clearer and more even. The more peels you have, the more noticeable the improvement in your skin will be. We recommend taking photos throughout your peel program so you can monitor your results.

Can I combine peels with other treatments and/or injectables?

Yes! Peels can be combined with professional facial treatments and LED, depending on your lifestyle at the time. They can be used to prepare the skin for more advanced treatments such as Cosmelan or skin needling. You can also combine skin treatments with injectables for a comprehensive anti-ageing treatment plan.

How do I begin my treatment plan?

We recommend booking a consultation with our skin therapists to determine the best starting point for your skin! All clients must be using active ingredients on their skin for 2-4 weeks before commencing peels. If you are not using cosmeceuticals currently, we can prescribe the perfect regime to prepare your skin for treatments.
