Treatment Downtime: What to Expect + How to Manage It

Cosmetic injectables have changed the way we address and combat the signs of ageing, offering a non-surgical alternative. But like any medical procedure, they come with their set of considerations, including downtime. Today we’ll explain what you can expect during this post-injection period and how to manage it effectively.

Common Side Effects: Bruising and Swelling

Bruising and swelling are common side effects of cosmetic injectable treatments. These reactions typically occur at the injection site and can last for several days. While these effects are temporary, understanding their potential impact and knowing how to manage them can make your post-injection experience more comfortable.

Pre-Treatment Recommendations

Before your injectable treatment, a few proactive measures can be taken to help minimise the likelihood of bruising. Avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning medications for 1-2 days before your appointment is a standard recommendation. Blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and certain supplements like fish oil, can contribute to increased bleeding and bruising. By temporarily discontinuing these substances where possible, you reduce the likelihood of post-injection bruising.

Post-Treatment Care

Once your injectable procedure is complete, the post-treatment phase is crucial.

  1. Exercise: In the first 1-2 days following your treatment, it's advisable to refrain from vigorous physical activities. Intense exercise increases blood flow and can heighten the risk of bruising. Giving your body a brief rest can significantly decrease the likelihood of post-injection bruising.
  2. Arnica Gel: Arnica gel is a popular natural remedy used to alleviate bruising and swelling. By applying Arnica gel to the treatment area, you can promote the healing process and reduce the severity of these side effects. At TAE, we stock AfterBalm, which contains Arnica and other skin-soothing ingredients.
  3. Ice Packs: Applying cold packs to the treated area is an effective method to mitigate swelling and bruising. The cold temperature causes blood vessels to constrict, which reduces the spread of a bruise and alleviates swelling. Gentle, intermittent applications of ice can provide relief without causing any harm.
  4. LED Sessions: If you're looking to expedite your recovery process, consider adding LED (Light Emitting Diode) therapy to your treatment regimen. LED sessions stimulate skin healing and are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. This non-invasive therapy aids in reducing swelling and speeding up the body's natural healing processes. The Healite II 830nm (yellow) wavelength is the best choice for post-injectable care.

Despite these precautions, some degree of bruising and swelling can still occur due to individual factors and skin sensitivity. If you find yourself with post-injection bruises, rest assured that they are typically mild and resolve relatively quickly. You can use makeup to conceal any discolouration as they fade. However, if you have any concerns, we recommend getting in touch with our team to ensure there are no complications.

In the realm of cosmetic injectables, bruising and swelling are normal side effects that can be managed with careful preparation and post-treatment care. While some individuals may experience minimal downtime, others might notice more significant effects. By understanding what's typical, you can approach your injectable treatment with greater confidence.
